The Festive Life

Being born and raised in Michigan certainly has conditioned us for a winter full of snow, pleasant family gatherings, and of course LIGHTS! And, while temperatures in South Carolina were low enough to put frost on our cars this morning, it still warms up to the 70s even into December! Well, that didn't stop us from checking out the James Island County Park Festival of Lights in Charleston a couple of weeks ago. For over 3 miles, cars were at a stop-and-go as gawkers were awed by a marvelous display of locally-sponsored lights separated into traditional holiday themes as well as some more non-denominational inspirations. Since moving to the Low Country in May, We've heard a lot of hype about the Festival of Lights and our first impression absolutely lived up to our expectations!

Now, I know what you're thinking. Brian, what about the Christmas displays along Lakeshore in Grosse Pointe? Brian, surely you're forgetting the Wesner house on Irval Drive in Sterling Heights! Brian, it's just not the same - where's the snow?!! Well, while I will never forget any of that, what made the Festival of Lights such a memorable experience was a little thing called spontaneity.

In a spur of the moment decision, I took Alyssa to James Island County Park for a drive-by light display. As we slowly passed a splendiferous show of snowmen, penguins, spacemen, and comets, one thought passed through my head - "When?" As we approached an awesome array of bridges, angels, candycanes, and reindeer, one idea approached the forefront of my brain - "Where?" And as we drove by some beautiful beams of sharks, fishermen, and Stars and Stripes, one intention kept me driven - "How?"

We finally arrived at the end of the Festival of Lights and I parked the car on the side of the road directly in front of a HUGE "Happy New Year" layout. I said to Alyssa, "Let's do something crazy" and she took that as my cue to exit the vehicle. I allowed her to pass in front of me towards the sign while I searched my phone for a particular song to play. She turned to me as the familiar drum beat reached her ears. Then the soft, melodic guitar came on and we joined in a hug to begin dancing. The singer began - "Maybe it's intuition. Some things you just don't question" - I parted from my love with the sweetest of objectives - "Like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant" - I put my left foot forward and my right knee on the cooling blades of grass below - "And there it goes, I think I found my best friend" - Still holding my phone in one hand, I grasped a lonely box in my pocket with the other - "I know that it might sound more than a little crazy but I believe" - She already covered her mouth with both hands in disbelief. I opened the box and asked her, "Would you be my future wife? Would you marry me?"

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" she shouted. "YES!! YESS!! YUSSSS!!!" she added as she ran back to me for the closest, tightest hug we've ever shared at that point. The chorus "I knew I loved you before I met you" played on, agreeably the most appropriate song considering the back story of our relationship. And I stood to collect her even closer with no awareness of our surroundings. Apparently, several cars had passed us, some honking in anger because we were blocking the pretty lights. But, more importantly, a white SUV parked almost directly behind my car whose occupants witnessed the entire moment! We were congratulated immediately by on-lookers Jason and Angela Woolfe with their two children in the back seat. They managed to capture the romantic event and, after an exchange of contact info, forwarded them to us.

We thanked the Woolfe's endlessly and wished them happy holidays as we got back into the car and drove off towards our future together (and towards some amazing authentic Italian cuisine complete with wonderful, complimentary wine!).

Alyssa and Brian are engaged! We want to thank everyone for their love and support as well as their patience while we make our decisions regarding a date, planning, etc..

Bookmark our blog and stay surfed for more updates to come including a post about moving into our new house and I'll remind you never to let me babysit your garden.. What the hell happened to my tomato plant?! Poor thing..

This is Life in the Lowcountry.

School, Work, Transitions!

We are SO sorry we have been MIA for a while! So much started with Brian and I that we're just trying to catch our breaths with all of it!

School
Oh boy!! What an amazing situation I have going on! 10 kids in 2nd grade, 11 kids in 7th grade and 12 kids in 8th grade. How does that sound? Like a dream? YES it SURE is! We have been able to dive right into our curriculum without any huge behavioral issues. My students are so great--I feel like I'm getting the best of both worlds!! My co-workers are more than helpful and I cannot believe the amount of resources support available for our students here. Judaism a very interesting religion and the kids are very serious about practicing. I can't even find one thing wrong with my job...I wake up--still groggy (I can't get over it..I don't think I'll ever be a morning person) but I LOVE coming to school! I am so excited to be doing something that I love--I hope that never fades :)

Work
Brian has a PACKED schedule!! He is delivering at Lowe's, Interning at 98rock/105.5 The Bridge...AND NOW.....He has a job at 94.3 WSC at Clear Channel! Phenomenal! He has reached his goal! Doing what he loves and what he has a degree in!!! I am just incredibly impressed and proud of him!! Things just keep moving on the up and up, and I just hope it keeps on going! Brian's goal is to have the 3 paying part time jobs...WOW! He has some intense goals! I cannot even think about having 3 part time jobs...that's more than one full time job!! All the power to him :)

Transition

It is TIME TIME TIME to LEAVE LEAVE LEAVE our janky apartment. Okay, it's not really that bad...but our rent is increasing and I do not have the mind to keep THROWING away my money! So....

WE BOUGHT A TOWNHOUSE!!!!!!!!

It is 30 minutes away from where we currently live, but we will be living in Charleston, SC...not Mount Pleasant, SC.

It's called Bolton's Landing (sub division) off of HWY 17 and Bee's Ferry (if you'd like to Google). Here is the model home...

It will look exactly like the hunter green model. It is in the style of the tall homes in down town Charleston. 3 levels, 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms...WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH 4 BATHROOMS?? I can't get over that!!!

We are thrilled--move-in date has been extended to the middle of November (that's a WHOLE other story...) and then we'll move in! We picked out black granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, wood floors, tiled bathrooms...oh boy OH BOY WE ARE SO EXCITED! I can't even begin to tell you!

View more photos here: https://picasaweb.google.com/kprincio/TheBoatwright#

Other than that, we're still trying to find some down time to be together and spend some quality time. We go to the Kickin' Chicken every Tuesday for "NAME THAT TUNE TRIVIA" it is SO fun! Last night, we got our butts royally KICKED, but still managed to pull 3rd place! We've one 2 third places and 1 first place! Kickin' Chicken gift certificates each time!

Weight Watcher's

Bri- down 52.4
Alyssa- down 28.3
& still going!
We need more aerobic/cardio dvds!!!

The current weather: 79 degrees, cloudy :)

Battery/Pineapple

Brian made an AMAZING picnic which we ate at the Battery---it is the eastern most point of the peninsula (look at a map) which is closest to the ocean. Some of the biggest and oldest houses line this area. It is such a peaceful place and very shaded--perfect for relaxing, walking your dog, or just sight seeing. There are many statues dedicated to the history of that area...but that'll be a completely different blog post all together.

That's a crane (we think...) and a squirrel that loved our popcorn! Odd creatures...didn't mind getting too close to people...

Our view from the blanket---perfect

We went to East Bay Street to see the fountains and the boardwalk. We played Dominoes! We play a lot of games together...we're kind of competitive, but in a really polite sort of way....lol

From Charleston July

Okay...I had to go to the bathroom...and Brian noticed this SILLY space between two buildings. It created a really bizarre kind of picture, but seriously, who in their right mind could fit in this "alley" they created? Just looking down this path makes me claustrophobic!!! That is all.

We shared an Italian Ice and enjoyed our view of this amazing sight---the Pineapple Fountain! I have NO idea if it is really called that...but it is pretty cool and the surrounding area is just as pretty as the Battery. It is right on the ocean and hosts the boardwalk, another spray fountain to play in, and a beautiful park setting! Love it soooo much!!

And we played. The end!

Well, not really the end...but basically. We are finding that without going on a tour and understanding the historical importance of this area, there are still so many beautiful sights to see...really. I feel so "right" when I walk through downtown and the ocean front...maybe because it's still very new to me, but it is extremely exciting to see that I belong to this area. Moving downtown would cost toooooo much money, but that would be the idea situation. But, living 7 minutes away isn't TOO bad :)

A Touristy 4th!

The Charleston City Market opened up its indoor area after a year remodeling. There are vendors from local businesses that line the stretch of breezeway buildings every day of the year. This flea market brings in new items often because the businesses rotate tables almost every day. Click here if you'd like to read more about it.

Here I am in front of the main building. Below is the entrance to the remodeled section which is air conditioned and houses the more 'established' businesses--I don't know how the other vendors don't die from being outside all summer long...but they do it!

These pictures show the view of the city from my position at the top of the steps.

We went out to dinner to a little Greek restaurant--Old Town Grill and Seafood.

I got the veggie wrap with feta cheese, tzatziki sauce and potatoes. DELICIOUS! Brian got the chicken livers...........okay? He took one bite and was like "oh...yeah...mhmm!" which convinced me that he enjoyed it but maybe that it was a different, but new, taste. When we got home...he was like..."that was so disgusting...but I didn't want to return it! First time for everything!" Then he started explaining that the chicken livers tasted like the weird brown bits on the bottom side of a rotisserie chicken. DUH!!!!!!!!! THATS WHERE THE LIVER IS!!! Lol whatever. He's silly. I have to give him credit though, I'm very safe when it comes to eating out--he tries anything!

The waitress that we had was super nice---she came to our table freaking out because she thought one of her costumers was Zak Galifinakis....and we told her it really could be him since he's shooting a movie in Charleston soon. Then she freaked out even more and we started freaking out. Brian kept peeking over and getting really excited. Well, the guy got up and I saw him. Definitely not him...but it was exciting for a second! Oh, please.

Okay...now here comes my favorite part of the touristy adventures.

I don't know if I'm over reacting, but this tree scares the crap out of me--and I think it does the same to Brian. This is the Angel Oak tree and it is rumored to be over 1,400 years old. It is the oldest living thing east of the Rockies. I don't really feel that the picture does the tree justice at all. We entered Johns Island and followed the GPS down to an unpaved road. We were moving slowly and looked to our lefts. Just beyond this chain-link fence was this ginormous creature. I swear, I've never seen Lord of the Rings, but anything in that movie couldn't possibly compare with this. It's creepy but eerily cool at the same time. There aren't any huge attractions or signs for this site, and sadly it closed after 5pm...but it was just...phenomenal to see. It was hard for me to get close to the fence because I thought the branches would grab me!!! This is something you just have to see in person.

Anyway...we spent 2pm-10pm on Isle of Palms for 4th of July!

Here I am, decked out for the day.

It was a really relaxing day! We caught some waves and I sat on the beach covered in tanning oil. Brian and I packed a HUGE picnic to try and stay on our WW--lots of snacks perfectly portioned...but being on the beach all day made us incredibly hungry at night. We went to get some food at the food stand. The fireworks were just amazing!! They were so close, I felt like we could touch them! It was a show that encompassed like...5 finales throughout! I love those kind. You think it's over, but it's not!!

Overall, we have been working a lot and trying to find time to exercise, eat right, and enjoy our surroundings. If I'm ever bummed about not being able to do something, Brian always says "Alyssa, it's okay, we live here now, we can see this whenever we want!" Very true! Plus, we can't be spending our money on crazy things every day! We're still consistently losing weight on Weight Watchers and have met some supportive people in the group. Our other plan is to start going downtown as much as we can and walk the streets for exercise. Parking is free after 6pm, and the sun is setting, so that's a perfect time for us!

My family is coming down in a few weeks--I cannot tell you how excited I am! It has been hard at times to be away from them. I didn't understand how close I was with my family until I moved--but it's a good excuse for them to come and take some time to visit!

We'll keep you updated on many more things to come!!!!!!

A virtue, indeed

"Said woman take it slow
It'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience"

Guns 'N Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin wrote and singer Axl Rose whined this aptly-named song "Patience". It was a beautifully played acoustic ballad released in 1989. Now, although I am taking the love song completely out of context for this blog post, these lyrics are more than appropriate, and here's why:

The other day I discovered the local Chevy dealer McElveen only about a mile down the road from the apartment and I decided it was time to get an oil change. I just got my last one back in April but I suppose two separate trips from Michigan to the Edge of America will really rack up those miles. Anyhow, I was playing a popular game on my phone while sitting in the waiting room and, before I knew it, CNN had recycled it's stories and I realized I'd been there for over an hour.. I never had to wait this long while getting a simple oil change with a requested, complimentary car wash, not even at the 3rd party service shops. As I tried to kill fat oinkers with flying squawkers using only a slingshot on my smart phone, I witnessed various sales and service representatives and even mechanics passing in and out of the waiting area. After a while, the sales clerk apologized for the extensive wait and informed me that he would go check on the status of my oil change. One cup of coffee and two cups of buttered popcorn later, the same gentleman explained that a communication error had occurred and that they were just starting to work on Henrietta. I sipped through another cup of coffee and one more cup of popcorn before I was approached by a service manager. I heard the good "S" word once more along with a more detailed explanation of the wait and I received a sincere handshake along with the key for my HHR. Now, I've always agreed time is money, for the most part. At risk of contradicting that statement, however, I do believe patience really is a virtue. From start to finish, I rolled out of the parking lot with a smile on my face and the satisfaction of receiving a free oil change and wash after waiting two and a half hours. Not a bad deal if you ask me!

"Kiss My Grits"

LIFE

I will start by admitting that I have caught myself actually speaking with a southern accent, especially when I'm at work around all the hillbillies.. Yep. Yuh spend so much time makin' fun of 'em by imitation and it becomes a second language, almost naturally. Alyssa and I have also had grits for the first time. Nothing special, really. They taste like cream of wheat. It's good! Anyhow, lemmy get to this post right quick <-- WHAT??!???>

WORK

I've officially decided to leave the Food & Beverage industry. I have put a two weeks notice in with Little Caesar's -- and on the very same day they decide to start making me an assistant manager.. My last day there will be June 23 (I think) and the only connection I can foresee myself having with F&B are the beautiful, ripe tomatoes I will be growing, hopefully sooner than later! Why the dramatic loss of interest? Well, I've been hired in as a delivery rider (not driver) for Lowe's and I'll sum it up by saying I've already received overtime for this "part time" position. I felt it was unfair to keep missing shifts and calling in to Little Caesar's, so I just left. Plus, Lowe's offers a plethora of great benefits and other incentives as well as promising opportunities for career advancement, even for those "part timers" such as myself. At the very least, I'm getting a LOT of exercise hauling refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers, and more, on and off of trucks, in and out of peoples' homes. This has become quite beneficial with the Weight Watchers program, as Alyssa mentioned in her post a few days ago. I'm also getting to know the areas in and around Mount Pleasant and getting some great ideas of places to look for our first home!!

FUN

Ever since we moved here, Alyssa and I have both heard from neighbors, colleagues, and passers-by about the Riverdogs.. They are a Minor League Baseball team and we got to go to our first home game against a team from Greenville, SC. The play-by-play announcer was annoying and unoriginal but it is the closest thing we have to any major sports franchise without having to travel a few hours to Columbia, Charlotte, or even Atlanta. Their stadium is called "The Joe" which I refuse to acknowledge, save for this rant, because I will always know Joe Louis Arena as "The Joe" and the official home of the Deeeeetrrroooooiiiit Red Wings! Actor Bill Murray, who lives in Mount Pleasant, apparently owns a part of the Riverdogs and can be seen at games on occassion. Additionally, it has come to our attention that many other celebrities have homes or vacation spots in and around Charleston such as Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Reese Witherspoon, and Bruce Willis and most noteably in the Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island areas. They even have their own private airport... I've already delivered to some of those areas and, although I am unimpressed, I am a bit envious of these large castles. I digress. Many players for the Riverdogs have been drafted to play for the Yankees, which means it made for a great game! We won 6 to 4 and I caught a free shirt for Alyssa when they were being thrown out into the crowd.

From Jun 13, 2011

Perhaps I can catch a "Great Clips Foul Ball" (sponsorship) at our next Riverdogs game!

MEDICINE

Did I mention I am in the delivery department for Lowe's? Oh, right, I did.. Well, that means I get to meet very interesting people and the places they live. I've begun asking a tiny mental list of regular questions to some of the customers. I would ask about places to go and eat or things to do and see. I met a group of retired teachers who recommended Locklear's Fine Seafood in Mount Pleasant. The entire experience was phenomenal! Our host was polite as he sat us to our booth. Our waitress Tabitha, who grew up in Mount Pleasant but sounded like she moved from up north, was very informative but even more so attentive to our needs; she even admitted that we were her only table at the time so check ups and water refills were quite frequent! Tabitha also answered each and every one of our picky questions in regards to health, reduced-guilt, and other Weight Watchers-related inqueries. We were able to order substitutions (i.e. oil instead of butter). After browsing the selections, we each decided to start with a cup of Locklear's award winning She Crab Soup. Similar to a clam chowder, this cream-based delight was full of crab meat and vegetables and we both agree with all of the food panels and judges to award this apetizing soup! Next came our house salads with ranch. The mixed greens and veggies were fresh and the creamy dressing has easily become a favorite for both Alyssa and me. Alyssa ordered the Pasta Locklear: sauteed shrimp and veggies over pasta with parmesan cheese. I ordered the blackened swordfish with rice pilaf and fried okra. Both entrees were marvelously delicious and I will just let the next two pictures share the rest because, after all, a picture is worth a thousand words, is it not?

DEATH

Lastly, I am officially a murderer.. Apparently, I planted Gabriel in the Topsy Turvy incorrectly and I neglected to remove the non-biodegradable pot. This caused poor flow of nutrients and subtle root rot to occur. As such, I bought Monty!

From Jun 16, 2011

He is the same species of tomato plant, Big Boy, and he came in a biodegradable pot. I wasn't prepared to accept a double homicide of vegetation, however, and I removed the pot and label. This should allow the water and soil to reach the plant and produce much healthier buds. I just planted Monty yesterday, so I will try to provide an update of his status in just a few weeks!

CLOSURE

That's pretty much it, for now.. I've recently downloaded a 3D design and engineering software to assist me with some inventive ideas I have. I've already said too much..

Stay clicked for more updates!

Jelly Balls!

There is a LOT to talk about!! Brian will be updating tomorrow or the next so there's not a whole bunch to throw at you at once.

BEACH

Brian and I went to the Washout at Folly Beach this weekend. He heard from a colleague that this was one of the best places to be on the beach. We packed a picnic and headed out. Folly Beach is about 30 minutes away (with traffic). No paid parking, vacation rental houses hoisted on stilts, and miles of sand. The water was like bath water, but we went in only to find a rocky floor. Meh. Oh, and did we mention that it's the best place for...surfers? Yeah. We went out on our boogie boards and I swear...almost got my head chopped off by a surf board!!!!!! Okay...not really.

Do you see...in the bottom right corner of the picture? The grey-looking thing? Totally a Jelly Ball.

They usually look like that just when they have washed on the shore. They are jellyfish without the tentacles--completely harmless, but gross. At least, to me!

We weren't feeling too hot about this area--I knew I was going to cut up my feet sooner or later (I know, I'm so lame) so we started our picnic and left to go to Isle of Palms!!

We packed little pizzas and watermelon! We love IOP the best. More sand space, smooth floor, very chill!

BIG NEWS

Brian and I started Weight Watchers!!! It has only been 2 weeks, and in the first week we already lost some weight! Brian lost 11 pounds and I lost 3! Can you believe it? Brian lost 11 pounds!!! LOL! I'm happy about my 3 pounds too; I know it's a lot easier for guys to lose weight faster--I'm just really happy for him! We will update about our weight loss through the blog. The only trouble we are finding is either 1) we cannot get up to our allotted points (weird, right?) and 2. the cost of eating healthy is EXPENSIVE!!! We're trying to get produce from the grocery store, but we're going to go back to the Vegetable Bin just as soon as we get a chance. We realized that Weight Watchers teaches discipline with food. How much we're eating, when, what...It's a good thing, and I think we can really stick with this!!

TEACHING

I was watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution the other night and he was trying to change the way some public schools feed their kids, which, I couldn't be happier to see. The...THINGS some kids are eating in the Charleston Public Schools are just...atrocious. Sometimes you cannot tell what is the potato and what is the meat! Even if they serve any kind of fruit, it is always bruised and spoiled. Those poor kids...half of them don't even eat! And you know some of them don't even get dinner.

Anyway, I subbed at the school I will be working in this fall. They have a beautiful, large salad bar with vegetables that they grow from their own garden. Holy cow, RIGHT? Along with hearty main courses-- one day I had fish sticks and boiled potatoes and the other, turkey meatball sub with corn! REAL STUFF, PEOPLE!! And the kids enjoy it!! There is always fresh cut fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, orange juice, and granola (all Kosher). TEACHERS EAT FOR FREE! WOO HOO! I am so excited for THAT!

I am ALSO excited because...the principal is making sure that I GET A SMART BOARD IN MY CLASSROOM!!!!! These SMART Boards are interactive overheads--they are touch sensitive and are wonderful for highly kinesthetic learners, or...you know...children that can't stay in their seats (most children :) ). I love using the SMART board---especially for math! (Learn more here: http://smarttech.com/)

DOWNTOWN

Speaking of school, we went by the College of Charleston where I believe I will be getting my Masters in Science and Mathematics Education.

It is the "Oldest Municipal College in America" or so said the plaque.

It is such a beautiful place to walk into and it is SO tucked away!!! That's probably the main building, and all of the other parts of the college are in houses that have been preserved by the city right in the downtown area!

Look out for Brian's post! He'll be talking about the Riverdogs, Locklears, his job, and more!

Red's Ice House/Sullivan's Island

We came back from a look around downtown's Market Street when we ventured onto the Sullivan's Island exit instead of the Mount Pleasant exit.

It was dusk and we were hungry! I heard a commercial for Red's Ice House a few days before: Live Music Every Night and Meals Starting at 5 Dollars!

We've been doing a great job of not eating out, so why not? We pulled up and waited for a parking spot for what seemed like forever...only to find out there was a spot 4 spaces closer to the restaurant..hehe...

Red's Ice House is located on the opposite side of Water's Edge (where Brian took me for my birthday) which has a breath-taking view of the channel that leads into a marina.

To our left...another restaurant

Our evening consisted of: acknowledging that our love could not reach each other across the width of the table (we don't sit next to each other like old people...and the table WAS really wide...) and trying to list all of the regulars and special guest's on the panel of Nickelodeon's old game show, Figure It Out. Summer Sanders does not equal Suzanne Summers, Brian.

And then, the food.

Brian has been very adventurous during our dining experiences so far. He orders "The Original ________" or asks every waiter/waitress to pick what he's going to eat. It's smart! If I wasn't so prone to stomach aches, I'd definitely do the same!

He got the "Signature Sandwich: The Great Grouper" I don't know...some kind of fish...in a sandwich.

Well, He liked it!

TIME FOR SOME FUN!!!

Tell me, what is the difference between these two photos?

If you guessed "Lady picking her butt" YOU GET A PRIZE!

We waited until the band started to play...

...and of course...country music. So we left.

Today we went to Sullivan's Island!! We had heard from many people (Brian heard from adults, I heard from kids :) ) That Sullivan's Island is one of the best places to be. It's less tourist-y than other beaches and it is very low key and peaceful. Well, it sure was!

This was one of the entrance ways to the beach. The difference between here and Isle of Palms is that the entire area is residential. You cannot find shops that cater to tourists, which is really nice. Oh, and zero meter parking! It was great!

We passed the "Charleston Light"

Like almost everything in Charleston, I thought this lighthouse would have a special historical background. It doesn't.

Anyway, the sand was ON FIRE!!!!! Apparently, today was the first real humid day in the area...but man, were my toes steaming! It got better when we put down our stuff and got into the water. We found that the waves are truly (can I say this?) lame. Maybe that's why it is such a calm beach. I know that we, as humans, need to just relax at some points, but I wanted some crazy action! Throw me around, nature! COME ON!

*I love this picture

It was beautiful though, aside from some guy standing in the middle of everyone with his fishing rod and HOOK! (Shudder)

We sat on our bottoms and bellies in the shallowest of water and just waited for the small waves as we talked. It was really nice! We walked up and down on the wet sand and saw schools of incredibly small fish trying to get back out to the ocean, but they always managed to get washed up again. What a struggle!

Our time at Sullivan's Island ended when Brian had to go to work. Great weekend! I think we can depict which beach to attend depending on our moods. Our next venture will be to....Folly Beach, dude!!! (The area is popular to a lot of surfing culture, thus, surfer lingo. I do not say the word "dude" often. Or, ever)

But, they do!!
